Australia Migration Process with Baby on the Way

Some people get confused on timing thing - when they are in the mid of PR process and also have their baby arriving in some time. If you are expecting these two things to be clashing in terms of time, then I would suggest you to think this through. To think through you need some points to put these thing in perspective and to know what can be affected if, lets say, you don't plan accordingly - before reading these, I expect you to be aware of the PR process for Australia Migration (if not, then you are supposed to click on the link given before and read :) ). If you have read then here are the points to consider:

  • If your baby is included in your visa application before you are granted visa, then baby is eligible to receive visa as a dependent along with your spouse.
  • If you are granted visa and you have your baby afterwards:
    • If baby is born in Australia to parents both having Australia PR then baby gets citizenship directly.
    • If baby is born outside Australia to parents both having Australia PR then baby does not get neither citizenship nor PR . PR process for baby would need to be carried out completely - there's a visa number for this purpose, I will check and update here.
  • To have baby included in your visa application, you must have his/her documents also ready, main of them is passport. Take into account how long does it take for new born to get passport in your country.
  • When to-be-mother is pregnant with baby, she can not complete her medicals - she would have to wait for baby to be born - at least for chest X-Ray part.
  • You can inform your CO about pregnancy situation with expected date of arrival - and then CO puts your case on hold until baby is born, documents are ready- then you can ask CO to include baby in application and have baby's medicals done!
  • No extra cost for including baby in current application.
So if in mid of your application process you find out about baby - then you strategy should depend on you current stage in process.
  • If to-be-mother have not undergone Medicals:
    • Then only option is to inform CO (when assigned) about the situation and put application in delay.
    • Generally its suggested that get all your documents including everyone's PCC and everyone's medicals (except mother's X-Ray) and submit them before your CO asks. When CO arrives, inform them about baby, get medicals status from him. Once your new baby is born inform CO about him/her, get his/her birth certificate and passport and you will have to get his/her medical examination plus mother's X-Ray.

This helps saves time in case if:
God forbid your medicals are referred they take around 3-4 months.
PCC can also takes time in some countries.
Sometimes security checks in certain countries take months.
So to save time get all these done.
  • If medicals are completed:
    • Either inform CO and see application can be put on hold until baby arrives and documents are ready to include him in process. Am not sure if CO entertains such requirement.
    • Or get your grant and then have baby - either outside Australia or in Australia - difference is explained in 2nd point in above points to be considered.

  1. Hi ,

Thank you so much for this wonderful blog.
It is the most helpful blog I found in internet on AUS migration.

Could you please advise on our situation?

We (Me,Husband and 3 year old) are planning to migrate to AUZ. I'm 4 months carrying now.

We are both IT professionals from India.
Planning to apply for ACS assessment by this week. ( Husband 10 years and Me 7.5 years Experience)

    IELTS is done.

Hope ACS results will come with in two months. I'll be 6 months then. (We will have 60 or 65 points ,depends on ACS result)

Is it a good idea to submit EOI ,when I'm 6 months carrying?

I understand from your blog that we can add new member before getting VISA.

Whether we will get CO assigned within 4 months,If our EOI got selected from pool?

Any suggestion will be really helpful for us.
    Thanks again for your blog
